Underworld Tours of York is a guided walking tour that delves into the city’s criminal past and the ways in which crime was punished. Our tours explore history dating back to 867 and are led by our experienced Detective Tour Guides.

York’s streets can be narrow and uneven, with cobbled surfaces. We will always take wheelchair users into consideration when planning our routes. If you use a manually operated wheelchair, we recommend bringing someone to assist you. For more information, please see our Accessibility Statement.

Underworld Tours is intended for audiences aged 13 and over. Anyone under 18 must be attended by an adult.

If anyone in your group is under 16, we highly recommend reading our content warning. As this tour does cover subjects that younger guests may find disturbing.

You can cancel your booking and receive a full refund if you cancel more than 48 hours before your scheduled tour. Cancellations made within 48 hours of the booking are non-refundable. You can learn more about refunds in our refund policy.

If it is raining in York (which it often is), tours will still run as scheduled. We recommend wearing appropriate clothing for the weather. In cases of extreme weather, such as storms or snow, the tour may be cancelled. If this happens, we will contact you to offer a full refund or the option to reschedule.

No. While our guides aren’t real detectives, they are trained actors who stay in character to keep you immersed in the story. We call them detectives to draw you into the tour’s Film Noir theme.
